A Month into the Growing Season: Our Garden Update
In just a few weeks, our gardens have changed dramatically. This season started late with a number of tasks that needed to be accomplished. The garden beds all needed heavy maintenance. Weeds were sprouting everywhere. There was a lot to be done before we could even start planting.
Thanks to the hard work of our volunteers, our Grow, Heal, and Thrive program youth participants, and the many people from our community who have shown support, we have seen an amazing amount of growth and improvement in the past four weeks.
A Healthy and Thriving Garden Each Week
Week after week, we have seen visible signs of progress. Plants are getting bigger, flowers are blooming, vegetables are developing, and the overall atmosphere of the garden is transforming from a blank slate to a vibrant garden full of life.
While it's exciting to see how much growth has occurred in the garden all July, we must also acknowledge that none of it would be possible without the regular maintenance the garden receives. This type of consistency is what allows a community garden to grow and develop into a reliable resource for the community.
And while the work isn’t easy, we know all the effort we put into the little things is the effort we save by preventing bigger issues.
Nurturing More Than Just Vegetables
Plants aren't the only thing we nurtured this month. Our garden provides a platform for young people to develop their self-esteem and connect with others in a meaningful way, all while learning valuable life skills. Whether just watering, pulling weeds, or planting new seeds, Mama's Healing Gardens help create a sustainable environment where wellness, food security, and environmental sustainability coexist.
Throughout this first month of operation, we have witnessed many youth participants claim ownership of the gardens, learn new gardening skills, and experience firsthand how satisfying it can be to nurture something that contributes positively to your community.
Celebrating the Small Wins
Harvestable produce may be a measure of success. Success is also seeing healthy green leaves replace weeds. It is the observation of pollinators returning to newly bloomed flowers. It is recognizing the work done the prior week allowed the current week to be less stressful because the garden was cared for consistently. These small victories remind us that positive transformation occurs gradually.
Into The Future
Now that August is near, we are eager for what is to come.
In the coming weeks, we anticipate further development in all aspects of our garden project. We look forward to offering additional educational experiences for our youth participants. And soon enough we will reap the benefits of a full season's harvest.
With continued growth of both our plants and our sense of community, we believe that this first month has established a solid foundation for the garden as well as for the relationships, knowledge, and collective purpose that allows Mama’s Healing Garden to exist.
To All Who Have Helped Us During This First Month
Thank you to every volunteer, youth participant, supporter, and community member who has helped contribute during this first month. Your time, energy, and support have created a wonderful thriving community space out of what was recently an overgrown plot.
Your efforts assist us in achieving our mission of establishing healthier communities via education, sustainability, and access to fresh/healthy foods.
We are proud of all that we have accomplished together thus far and are equally as excited for what is yet to come!
